SingNet Value Added Services - SingNet Modemwall

SingNet introduces Modemwall service to all SingNet Dial-Up and BroadBand customers. This service helps you fight the serious threat of unauthorised PC modem dialers and provide maintenance-free security.

FAQ on service closure.

1. Why is SingNet closing this service?

This service has been offered by SingNet since early 2006. However, due to the lack of interest in this service, the number of people moving from dial-up to broadband service and in light of increasing costs, we've decided to remove this service from our product offering.

2. What can I do to protect myself from modem hijackers?

You can sign up for SingNet Security Suite which will help to protect you from such online threats. You can take note of some following actions and precautions, most of which are covered by the SingNet Security Suite:
  • Get virus protection and keep it up to date
  • Use a firewall which will prevent hackers from getting into your computer.
  • Use anti-spyware
  • Use pop-up blockers on your internet browsers.
  • When online, check that the dial-up number you are using is the one you've selected.
  • Beware of fraudulent websites. Don't click on URLs in emails, instant messages or pop-ups, especially from people you don't know. Instead, manually copy and paste the address into your browser.

3. I've already downloaded and installed SingNet ModemWall. Will this be removed from my computer when the service is terminated?

No. The software that you've already downloaded will remain in your computer. Whilst you will still be protected with the current configurations, you will not receive any further updates and this software will not offer adequate protection over time.

General FAQs

What is an unauthorized dialer?

Unauthorized dialer’s are malicious software programs that can silently install on a home user’s PC. Once installed they can ‘hijack’ the modem used to connect to the Internet:

When a user tries to connect to the Internet using their modem, instead of dialing their normal ISP telephone number, the malicious dialer will often ‘hijack’ the call, instead dialing a premium rate phone number instead. As this process is ‘silent’ the user is typically unaware of any interruption to their service and of the massive telephone bill they could incur.

Malicious dialers are often written by the same people who own the premium rate telephone number the dialer calls. This way they not only cause massive disruption to user’s PC and Internet experience, but generate a great deal of money through illegal means at the same time.

What are premium-rate phone numbers?

Premium rate phone numbers are ‘special’ telephone numbers that have a higher than normal call charge fee associated with them. Instead of being charged the normally expected rate to call these numbers, callers are often charged many times more per minute for the ‘privilege’ of accessing them.

Are broadband users affected?

Yes, any PC which has a modem built into it and has a cable connect from it to an active telephone wall socket is at risk from malicious dialing.

Many broadband users make use of their modems to send and receive faxes, and so can easily fall prey to dialers if they do not use a powerful solution such as SingNet Modemwall.

What does SingNet Modemwall do?

SingNet Modemwall allows a user to specify dialing ‘rules’ that are used to analyse any outbound dialing attempts. The powerful dialling rules check the telephone number that is being called to ensure it is an ‘authorised’ number.

If the number being dialled is not recognised SingNet Modemwall blocks the dial attempt and alerts the user.

How do I start SingNet Modemwall?

Once installed, SingNet Modemwall will start automatically whenever you turn on your PC.

How can I be certain that the application is running?

You will see a small SingNet Modemwall icon in the bottom right-hand side of your Microsoft Windows taskbar. If you cannot see it, please ensure you expand the task bar as the icon can become hidden, depending on your system setup.

What will happen if my PC attempts to make a call using a malicious dialer?

SingNet Modemwall will present a pop-up window on your screen alerting you to the call attempt, any associated details, and notify you that it has been blocked.

What do I do if my PC is attempting to dial an unapproved number?

Unless you install a solution such as SingNet Modemwall it is very difficult to know whether the number your PC is dialing has been approved or not.

SingNet Modemwall automatically alerts and blocks attempts to dial out to unauthorised telephone numbers.

Will SingNet Modemwall stop me from making an Internet connection?

No, as long as your Modemwall dialing rules have been correctly configured (typically the configuration is automatically setup for you upon installation) the solution will not prevent you from making an Internet connection via an approved telephone number.
