Value Added Services - Phone Backup

Phone Backup allows you to backup all your phone data (such as contact list, calendar, task) via a SyncML-enabled phone to a server, anytime & anywhere.


You will have total peace of mind.


1. What is Phone Backup?
Phone Backup is a service that allows you to backup all your personal data via a SyncML-enabled phone to secured SingTel server. With Phone Backup, you no longer have to worry about recovering your lost personal data and can have a peace of mind and convenience of managing them.
2. What is SyncML?
SyncML is an industry standard to develop and promote a single common data synchronizing protocol that can be used to synchronize any SyncML-enabled devices and application over any network. SyncML-enabled device will have a built-in SyncML client to support this protocol.
3. Is there a minimum subscription period for this VAS?
Yes, the minimum subscription period for this VAS is 1 month.
4. How do I register for Phone Backup service?
You can register by via these 3 modes :

• Via phone and (no charge for this *send)

5. I have already registered for Phone Backup. How do I start to use the service?

To perform synchronization from your device/phone, you should look for the Sync. icon in your device/phone.
6. Are there any restrictions on the type/model of mobile phone for Phone Backup service?
Yes. This service is supported by selected models of devices. You can check via 3 modes:

7. What is the storage capacity for Phone Backup service?
Depends on your device, some models can take up to 500 contacts while others can store up to 250 contacts. Phone Back-up server can store up to 2000 contacts.
8. Will SingTel sell my Contact List to 3rd party?
No. We are firmly committed to respecting your privacy. We do not share your information. We do not share your information with any third party without your prior consent. We strictly abide by our privacy policy.
9. How secured is the Phone Backup service? Will the system be hacked?
Only a Phone Backup subscriber has access to his/her account. From the WEB portal, this service is protected by Secured Socket Layer via the internet whereas across mobile network for data access and Over-the-Air backup, it is protected by SingTel mobile network.
10. If I accidentally erased my Phonebook in my device, is there any way for me to retrieve the lost data?
Yes, if your deleted contacts are already stored in the server. All you have to do is to initiate a synchronization session & all your contacts stored in the server will be restored to your device.
11. When roaming will I able to perform synchronization?
Yes, so long as the country you are roaming with is a SingTel roaming partner and you have enabled GPRS roaming using a syncML-enabled device, configured to use GPRS and WAP service. Please note that GPRS roaming charges would apply. You can access via IDEAS WAP & web only.
12. Can I synchronize multiple devices with my account?
Yes. You can use an unlimited amount of supporting devices with Phone Back-up service. All you need to do is to ensure that all devices are added into the Phone Backup system. However, synchronization should be perform on 1 device at a time.
13. The contacts in my SIM card could not be synchronized. Why?
Phone Backup service only synchronize the contacts that are stored in the phone memory. If you wish to backup your SIM card, you can copy all your contacts from your SIM card to the phone & perform synchronization.
14. Can I synchronize Outlook with Phone Back-up Service?
No. This feature is not supported at this moment.
15. Why do I get 'synchronize interrupted' every now and then?
There could be many different reasons for your problem. For example:
a. There is some problem with the GPRS connections
b. There is software failure in your device
c. There is a failure in what the server and your device sending to each other. Please refer to 'sync status' page for details.

16. Who is eligible to subscribe to Phone Backup?
All new and existing SingTel Mobile Post-paid subscribers (both 2G and 3G) are eligible for this service.
17. I am a Pre-paid subscriber. Can I subscribe to Phone Backup service?
This service is only applicable to SingTel Mobile Post-paid subscribers (both 2G and 3G).
18. I subscribe to TWIN Card service. Which SIM card can I use to synchronize the entries?
As TWIN Card is having 1 mobile number with duplicated SIM card number, the Phone Backup service behavior should be as follows:-

For example, User uses device A (with the 1st SIM card) to do a synchronization of 450 entries. Wendy Lee (mobile 91111111) is one of the entries being synchronized. Subsequently, when the User uses device B (with the 2nd SIM card) to do a 2nd synchronization of 480 entries, at the same time, he amended Wendy Lee’s number to 98888888 plus a 2nd entry of 97777777 under Wendy Ho.

The phonebook system entries should now be updated with 481 entries with the 1st Wendy Lee contact changed from 91111111 to 98888888 & Wendy Ho entry as 97777777.
19. I subscribe to 2-in-1 SIM service. Which SIM card can I use to synchronize the entries?
As 2-in-1 SIM is having 2 mobile numbers tied to 1 SIM card, the User have to apply for Phone Backup service independently for the 2 mobile numbers.

For example, If mobile number 91111111 subscribes to Phonebook Back-up service while mobile number 92222222 does not subscribe, the User of the 2-in-1 SIM has to toggle 91111111 to “active” before he can synchronize his phonebook. However, the entries in his phone can be used by both numbers. If he toggles 92222222 to “active”, he will not be able to do any synchronization but he will still be able to view the phonebook entries in his phone.

For example, if both 91111111 & 92222222 subscribe to Phonebook Back-up service, the User will have 2 independent records at the server. Whatever that is synchronized while 91111111 is “active” will be updated to 91111111 record at the server. The same would apply for 92222222.

20. I subscribe to Multi-SIM service. Which SIM card can I use to synchronize the entries?
As Multi-SIM service has 1 mobile number with different SIM card numbers, all the SIM cards can be used to synchronize. The Phone Back-up synchronization behavior should be as follows:

For example, User uses device A (with the 1st SIM card) to do a synchronization of 450 entries. Wendy Lee (mobile 91111111) is one of the entries being synchronized. Subsequently, when the User uses device B (with the 2nd SIM card) to do a 2nd synchronization of 480 entries, he amended Wendy Lee’s number to 98888888 plus a 2nd entry of 97777777 under Wendy Ho.

The phonebook system entries should now be updated with 481 entries with the 1st Wendy Lee contact changed from 91111111 to 98888888 & Wendy Ho entry as 97777777.
Please note that only 1 SIM can be used to synchronize at any one time.
21. I subscribe to Phone Backup service. I want to change my mobile number. Can I continue to use the service or do I have to re-subscribe for the service again?
You do not need to re-subscribe to Phone Backup service again. SingTel will link all the backup info in the server to your new number.
22. I subscribe to Phone Backup service. I want to change my mobile line’s price plan to another price plan. Do I need to re-subscribe to the service again?
If you change plan to an eligible price plan, you just need to inform STM that you wish to continue subscribing to Phone Backup service.
23. I subscribe to Phone Backup service. I wish to transfer my mobile line to another subscriber. Can the new subscriber retain Multi-SIM service?
No. Phone Backup service is non-transferable due to security & data sensitivity concern. The new subscriber needs to apply for Phone Backup service on his/her own.
24. If I wish to terminate my Phone Backup service, what should I do?
You may call 1626 to terminate your Phone Backup Service. The termination will take 1 working day to be effected.
25. Will I be charged every time when I do synchronization?
Yes. Prevailing GPRS traffic charges apply when you do synchronization.
26. Will there be any penalty charge if I terminate the service?
As long as you fulfill the one-month subscription period, there will be no penalty charge if you terminate the service.
27. Will there be any limitations when I want to do a Calendar backup?
For certain phones, data saved in some categories may not be sent back to the device under the same category when you do a synchronization. An example of this would be the Anniversary field on Nokia Symbian phones. When you synchronize Anniversary from device to the server, it will be handled as Meeting because the server currently do not support Anniversary field. Hence, when you do a synchronization back to the device, the data will be handled as a meeting instead.
