This service is based on the ADSL technology. ADSL, which stands for Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line, transforms a pair of twisted copper wires between a local telephone exchange and a customer's telephone socket into a high-speed digital line. It is called 'asymmetric' because it moves data more quickly from exchange to customer (downstream) than from customer to exchange (upstream). This makes it particularly suitable for applications where customers expect to receive more data than they transmit such as use of the World Wide Web and reception of digital audio-visual contents.
It operates over a single, a pair of twisted copper wires and provides the connection with a pair of modems, one at the user end and the other at the exchange. The modems are designed to utilise the physical transmission capabilities of copper lines beyond the frequencies used for normal telephony service. With the utilisation of the higher frequency, high-speed data can be transmitted via the copper wire.
The ADSL modem used together with a micro-filter enables a simultaneous access to the voice telephony and the high-speed data. The micro-filter basically acts as a filter to separate the high and low frequencies to ensure both signals (ADSL and telephony) can reside in the same copper pair without interfering with one another.
Benefits
SingTel BroadBand Access service allows you to access the Internet at broadband speeds of up to 3.5Mbps downstream and up to 350kbps upstream. Downstream refers to the direction from exchange to the end user while upstream refers to the direction from the end user to the exchange.
- With the BroadBand Access Service, users surfing the Internet will not incur local toll charges.
- You will be able to receive incoming and make outgoing telephone calls or faxes while you are surfing the Internet. This is possible because the high and low frequencies carrying data and voice respectively are separated and able to co-exist in the same copper wire.
Increases efficiency and no more time wasting down loading large files from the Internet.
- SingTel BroadBand Access Service provides a dedicated service over a single telephone line and not over a shared media. In other words, it would form a much stable platform for a constant uninterrupted stream of information or data.
